Are you keen to lobster in Florida

Are you keen to lobster in Florida

Last year, 4 million pounds were commercially caught in the Keys. It was the sixth worst catch in the 19 years records have been kept, but represents ``the new average,'' as it is said.

Lobster fishermen have had a tough go of it the past few years, starting with the 2001-2002 season when the commercial landings in Monroe County plummeted to 2.7 million pounds from nearly 5 million pounds the previous year and 6.8 million pounds the year before that.

Prices also fell because the worldwide recession dramatically reduced demand for luxury seafood.

Lobster fishermen also have been slammed with rising fuel costs, cheap imports and a slew of hurricanes through the years that destroyed thousands of their uninsured traps each worthy about $35 to $50 .

Traps also don't come with alarms. Trap robbing has always been a big problem.
